About Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education - Leadership

The Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education - Leadership is designed to equip leaders of preschool centres with the skills necessary for running a high quality preschool programme. This programme will highlight the various administrative and managerial functions neccessary for an organized and effective preschool.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education - Leadership by Learning Capital College and Diploma of Higher Education in Pre-school Educaiton by the University of Wales.

Students can proceed to pursue a Degree in Early Childhood Education by the University of Wales.

Programme Objectives

  • Master the necessary knowledge and skills for planning, implementing and evaluating a preschool curriculum

  • Requisite knowledge and skills for encouraging human relations.

  • Develop motivational leadership and effective communication

  • Develop supervisory skills for effective staff appraisal and development

Course Outline

Module 1 : Current Issues and Research in Early Childhood Care and Education (60 hours)

  • Current trends and issues in early childhood care and education
  • Innovations and changes in the education system in Singapore
  • Recent research in early years – findings and reports on child development, learning and implications for early childhood care and education
  • Current trends on working with children with various types of exceptional needs

Module 2 : Designing the Early Childhood Care and Education Curriculum (180 hours)

  • Designing a developmentally and culturally appropriate early childhood care and education programme
  • Monitoring, assessing and evaluating the early childhood care and education programme
  • Promoting bilingual-literacy in early childhood care and education programme
  • Planning and organising the physical environment and space
  • Integrating structured and unstructured play into the curriculum
  • Working with children with special needs: curriculum design, implementation and strategies
  • Guiding teachers in the planning and organizing of collaborative learning for young children
  • Using environmental resources and Information Communication Technologies (ICT) in early childhood care and education programmes
  • Guiding teachers in planning for integrative learning in Language and Literacy, Numeracy, Environmental Awareness, Aesthetics and Creative Expression, Self and Social Development (including Health Awareness), and Motor Skills Development
  • Evaluating learning using a variety of assessment techniques

Module 3 : Understanding and Implementing Action Research in Early Childhood Care and Education (90 hours)

  • Overview of different types of research in early childhood care and education
  • Action research and its relevance to early childhood care and education
  • Process of action research
  • The implications of research findings

Module 4 : Leadership, Management and Administration in Early Childhood Care and Education Settings (230 hours)

  • Leadership qualities
  • Planning, management and administration of early childhood care and education centres and evaluation using assessment tools
  • Policies, administrative and operational procedures and issues
  • Financial planning, management and control
  • Managing change in early childhood care and education settings
  • Human resource management
  • Mentoring
  • Use of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) in administration and communication

Module 5 : Professional Development (30 hours)

  • Relating global trends and current events to early childhood field
  • Effective communication skills

Module 6 : Partnership with Families and the Community (60 hours)

  • Respect for diversity in a multicultural society
  • Understanding of issues and problems faced by families in a multicultural society
  • Designing partnership programmes for families and community
  • Early childhood care and education centre as a resource for families and the community
  • Strategies for conflict resolutions
  • Managing feedback from families, relevant agencies and public members

Module 7 : Supervised Leadership Practice (200 hours)

  • Pre-practicum preparation
  • Field experience
  • Supervised practicum
  • Post Practicum – Summary of experience

Course Duration And Delivery

The course comprises of 7 modules conducted over 650 classroom hours and 200 practicum hours. Students will meet 2 to 3 sessions a week for a 2 to 3 hours session.
